When do you need a dental crown?

When a tooth is decayed, a dental filling is sometimes enough to restore the tooth’s health and prevent the bacteria from spreading.  But in cases when the tooth has been fractured or the decay has impaired the tooth’s structure, a dental crown is usually a better option. When determining whether a filling or a crown is most appropriate, your dentist will take into consideration the size of the cavity and the condition of the tooth.  A dental crown may be needed if:

  • The cavity is larger than appropriate for a filling
  • Your tooth is cracked or broken
  • Your tooth is weak
  • Your tooth structure has been impaired by other fillings
  • You need a dental implant
  • You’ve had a root canal
  • You’ve opted for a bridge to replace a missing tooth

When you come to BioDental Care for a consultation, our dentist will perform an examination to determine whether you need a filling or a crown, or some other dental procedure to restore the strength and health of your smile.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is the part of your tooth that you can see above the gum line, while the roots lie below. When a natural crown is fractured or decayed and can’t be repaired by a filling, our dentist  gently shapes and fit an artificial crown to restore the function and appearance of the damaged tooth.

How do you know if there is a decay under the crown?

What to expect when you book a dental crown appointment in Tijuana, Mexico

Booking a dental crown procedure at BioDental Care in Tijuana involves a professional and efficient two-visit process. Here’s a simple breakdown of what you can expect:

Visit 1: Tooth Preparation & Temporary Crown

Time: 1–2 hours

  • Comprehensive examination to assess the tooth and treatment needs.

  • Tooth is reshaped to make space for the crown.

  • Digital or traditional impressions are taken to create a natural-looking custom crown.

  • A temporary crown is placed so you can eat and speak comfortably.

  • You return home while your permanent crown is being fabricated.

Crown Fabrication Time

  • Custom dental crown creation takes about 1 week.

  • If you need a full-mouth restoration, fabrication may take up to 2 weeks.

  • Once ready, the clinic will contact you to schedule your second visit.

Visit 2: Permanent Crown Placement

Time: ~40 minutes per crown

  • Temporary crown is gently removed.

  • Permanent crown is fitted, adjusted for comfort and bite alignment.

  • The crown is securely bonded in place.

What do the procedures entail exactly?

Getting a dental crown is much like having a filling performed, both in length of time and comfort level. After decay has been removed and the tooth is reduced in size, leaving only healthy tissue, we take an impression that is used in creating the final crown.  A second visit is scheduled for placement of the final crown. In the meantime, we place a temporary tooth to protect the reduced tooth and to allow you to use it as you would a natural tooth.

What types of dental crowns do we offer at BioDental Care, Tijuana Mexico?

At BioDental Care, we offer zirconia crowns and ceramic crowns. Both are strong, long-lasting, and beautiful options for restoring smiles.  Each material has its particular benefits.

  • Zirconia has been used regularly in dental restoration since the early 2000s, and it continues to grow in popularity. Known for its durability, zirconia can withstand 5x the pressure of chewing and biting that ceramic can.  Zirconia is also stain-resistant, metal-free, and biocompatible.
  • Ceramic has been used in dentistry as far back as the late 1800s. Not only is it strong and durable, but because it reflects light in the same way natural teeth do, ceramic crowns look more like natural teeth than other types of crowns. Ceramic crowns are also comfortable, resistant to breakage, and biocompatible.

Sometimes, deciding on the best crown type for your teeth is a matter of personal preference. Other times, the doctor may recommend one or the other, depending on the specifics of your procedure, the location and condition of your treated tooth,  and the condition of the teeth around it.

FAQ about Dental Crowns

No. Thankfully, as with a filling and most dental procedures, local anesthesia is used to numb the area. You may feel a little discomfort as the anesthesia wears off but nothing that can’t be easily controlled with over-the-counter pain medications. We do offer a variety of sedation and anesthesia options upon request. Your comfort is our priority.

It’s best to wait about 30 minutes after the completion of your procedure before eating or drinking. We recommend you wait 24 hours before eating anything hard or sticky that might pull at the crown, as the cement is setting.

Dental crowns can last up to 20 years, depending on care, location in the mouth, and the materials used for the procedure. We’ve seen them last even longer!

Care for a crown the way you care for your natural teeth. Simply brush twice and floss once daily, and make sure to keep up on your regularly scheduled cleanings with us.
